There will be three teams from the school participating in the AND1 Streetball Challenge.
Syed Syamil Syed Ahmad Nizam, the 16-year-old captain for the boys’ team, was ecstatic that his wish to take part in a competition such as AND1 would come true.
“I have only watched the streetball competitions via YouTube and I hope to join the competition to gain experience.
“I enjoy playing basketball as it teaches us discipline and teamwork,” he said.
Nur Syaqilah Ikmal Hisam, 16, the captain for the girls’ team, has been playing basketball since Form One, thanks to her senior who encouraged her to take up the sport.
“I played with the seniors and I was the youngest player. It was difficult keeping up with the experienced players but it helped me to hone my skills.
“I have only watched basketball competitions on TV, so now I can watch it live,” she said.
Ng praised the young players for their ability to grasp his coaching method during the clinic.
He taught them basic skills as he believes that it is important to have a strong foundation.
“Their defence and shooting skills are better than I expected. If they train harder, they can be better,” he said.
The final round of the AND1 Streetball Challenge will be held at Berjaya Times Square on Oct 20.
Participants can also take part in the Best Shooter and Slam Dunk contests. The In Search of Streetballers is another interesting side event included for the occasion.
The winner of this category will become ambassador for the AND1 Streetball Challenge next year.
The AND1 Streetball Challenge is an event sanctioned by the Malaysian Basketball Association.
StarMetro is the official media partner of the tournament, Milo the official beverage sponsor, One FM the official radio and Spalding the official ball.
