ANTICIPATION is running high for the final round of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at Berjaya Times Square on Oct 20.
This year the AND1 Streetball Challenge will celebrate its 10th anniversary and the entries are pouring in with 354 teams already confirming their participation.
Nestle sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong advised teams to register early to avoid any disappointment.
“The maximum number of participating teams is limited to 420, so for those interested, the deadline for registration is on Oct 13,” he said.
“A new ball featuring graffiti designs will be used to encompass the trendy style of the event and there will also be a new jersey for this year’s tournament,“ he added.
Ng said that the event has grown in stature and that parents are encouraging their children to take part.
“From the feedback we received, the most entries come from parents whose interest has increased over the years because they want their kids to gain from playing basketball in a competitive manner and gain from tournament exposure.
“Youngsters who have taken part in this event before are also encouraging their younger siblings to join in,” said Ng.
Muhd Amirul Mohd Saad, 20, a streetballer, first participated in the AND1 Streetball Challenge in 2009.
“I am a big fan of this challenge and have gained so much from being a participant.
“Most of those taking part in the event are bright academically and it helps them both in teaching them discipline in the sport and also their studies,” said the bubbly lad who will soon be joining the police force.
Besides the main highlight, participants can take part in the Best Shooter and Slam Dunk contests. The In Search of Streetballers is another interesting side event included for the occasion.
The winner of this category will become ambassador for the AND1 Streetball Challenge next year.
The AND1 Streetball Challenge is an event sanctioned by the Malaysian Basketball Association.
