DESPITE the scorching heat, 30 students of SMK Sin
Min (Private) in Sungai Petani, Kedah, were all ears as they listened
attentively to the advice given by professionals during the AND1
basketball clinic.
In the two-hour session, national basketball player Ng Sing Tee, 25, and a Kuala Lumpur player Yong Kok Wai, 26, shared insights and several tips about the game.
The students were then taught how to dribble, shoot and apply ‘defensive duty’.
To emphasise dribbling, Ng used tennis balls to stress on the importance of ball control and focus.
“Dribbling is one of the most important aspects in basketball.
“Using a tennis ball is a new technique in Malaysia. Some players are too focused on dribbling and pay little attention to others during the game,” he said during the clinic at the school recently.
Ng said basketball could promote moral values such as self-discipline, teamwork and time management.
“They need to balance sports and studies. And they also need to excel in both,” he said.
Student Lim Yee Shen, 13, said he liked Ng’s teachings although the moves were quite tough.
Another club member Foo Wen Xuan, 15, said her defensive skills should improve after this clinic.
“It’s a little tiring but it’s all right as this is a rare chance to be coached by a national player.
“I hope more national basketball players will come and share their skills with us,” Foo said.
SMK Sin Min was the only school chosen in Kedah for the AND1 basketball clinic, which was held in conjunction with AND1 3x3 Streetball Challenge.
The AND1 3x3 Streetball Challenge will be held at Penang Times Square in George Town on Oct 4 from 9am. Registration closes on Sept 28.
In its 11th year, the event organised by W.O.S. World of Sports (M) Sdn Bhd is open to Malaysians and non-Malaysians and divided into four categories of Boys Under-13, Boys Under-15, Boys Under-18 and Men Under-21.
The challenge is limited to 200 teams only where the top three winners will represent the northern region to compete in the grand finals at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur, on Nov 23. Registration closes on Sept 29.
Besides Penang, the challenge was also held in Klang on May 25, Johor on June 28 and Malacca on Sept 7.
The competition is sanctioned by the Malaysia Basketball Association.
