MALACCA: With the upcoming AND1 Streetball Challenge 3 on 3 competition at Malacca’s Mahkota Parade on Sept 7 confined to only boy’s and men’s teams in the Under-13, 15, 18 and 21 age group divisions, 10 girls joined their 25-strong male counterparts, at a sponsored Basketball Coaching Clinic conducted at the Pay Fong School (PFS) outdoor court in Jalan Kubu.

Supervised by national player Ng Sing Tee with PFS basketball master and Selangor stalwart Chiew Chia Siang assisting, the 35 players were put through their paces in the fundamental and rudiments of the game at the two-hour long clinic in preparation for the early September event.

According to Ng, the clinic acted as a platform to input all participants with insights into playing the game coupled with advanced techniques and tips in areas covering footwork, passing, jump stops, pivoting, blocking out, dribbling and shooting.

Ng said, “There are so many situations and routines that coaches and players face during game or match plays.

“The only thing that works against all situations, no matter what age level or team standard, are the basic fundamentals of the game. In this respect, dribbling, shooting and ball handling, the basic game rudiments are vital before moving into areas governing individual offensive and defensive tactics and stances, perimeter play and overall match tactics.”

According to local school coach Chiew, in the forthcoming 3 on 3 competition, there is much emphasis on shooting the hoop fast. In this department, trainees were shown the proper foot alignments, leg bend, hand position, arm angles and follow through stances to prime their shooting abilities.

The ANDI Basketball Company Streetball Challenge organised by W.O.S. World of Sports (M) Sdn. Bhd., is back on the local sporting scene after a two-year lapse with Milo listed as the official beverage sponsor with Star Metro as the official media, One FM as the official radio and Spalding, the official ball supplier.

The day-long competition on Sept 7 to be played out over eight courts at the Mahkota Parade public car park is open to Malaysians as well as non-Malaysians for boys and men’s teams with a total cash prize of RM1,800 for the top three teams up for grabs apart from health products and sports merchandise also into the bargain as prizes.

Current as well as ex-national senior or junior players are not allowed to compete.

Other contest highlights slated to be competed in conjunction with the 3 on 3 competition are the Search of Streetballer, Best Shooter, Slam Dunk Stylist, where winners will be eligible to compete in the grand finals slated for Nov 23 at Berjaya Times Square.
