JOHOR BARU: It was double joy for 14-year-old Low Meng Lek in the second leg of the AND1 Streetball challenge because not only did his team emerge as the champion but he got selected as the most promising player in the challenge.
His three-men team, GP I Love You, won the boys’ Under 14 challenge while Low was voted StarMetro’s Most Promising Player in the challenge at Danga Bay recently.
Low from SMK Gelang Patah thanked his team-mates for their support in helping him clinch the award.

He was quite surprised to have beenvoted as the most promising player in the challenge.
“I was surprised to have been selected as there were other players who were much bigger and better than me,” he said.
Low, who idolises Los Angeles Lakers star player Kobe Bryant said he started playing basket­­-ball when he first watched Bryant on television some four years ago.
In being voted as the StarMetro Most Promising Player in the challenge, Low will be able to train at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) academy.
He added that he could not wait to be trained under the watchful eyes of professional coaches at MABA.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to be train at MABA is a dream come true for me,” he said.
A downpour failed to dampen the spirits of eight finalists as they strived to emerge champion.
A total of 200 teams took part in the event.
In the boys’ Under-14 category, GP I Love You emerged champions while Skudai U16 were champions in the boys’ Under-16 age group.
Skudai B were champions in the boys’ Under-18 age group while the Flat Belly emerged champions in the girls’ Under-18 age group.
Tay Yu Heng emerged as the winner in the Freestylist competition where he was among the three finalists.
The other two were Tan Qi Han and Teng Seng Fu.
The AND1 Streetball Challenge is sanctioned by Maba with Milo as the official beverage, StarMetro as official media, FlyFM and OneFM as official radio, Doublemint as the official chewing gum and Danga Bay as venue sponsors.
After Danga Bay, the challenge will move to Klang, Selangor on June 6 followed by the fourth leg in Penang on July 11.
The challenge will culminate with the grand finals at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 8.
