JOHOR BARU: Never give up is the
motto for Yeo Yong Hao who has been participating in the AND1 3x3
Streetball Challenge 2015 for the past eight editions.
The 22-year-old, who is working in Singapore, said that this time
around he wants to make sure he is able to win at least one competition
in the one-day event.
“Me and my two other friends take part in the men’s open category but
it is in the individual competition that I wanted to win the most.
“My strength is the slam dunk competition where I have been
practising for at least a week before the challenge starts,” he told StarMetro during the event held at Dataran Bandaraya here recently.
Yeo pointed out that he has been watching closely how NBA star Kobe
Bryant was able to do his slam dunk in competitive matches in television
as well on Youtube.
“Kobe is the best slam dunk around, where he been doing it for the
past 10 years and I am his biggest fan. I always try to copy his moves,”
he said.
After eight years of trying, Yeo finally got his hands on the StarMetro Slam Dunk Competition trophy after beating six other competitors.
Meanwhile, a girl put to shame eight boys by winning the best shooter
competition after putting in six balls into the net in a row.
SMK Seri Alam 2 student Fong Yeu Tyan, 15, said that she has been
playing basketball for the past three years, including representing her
school and state in national level competitions.
“Actually, I never wanted to take part in the competition but my
friends told me that I would be able to beat the boys in their own game.
“I took up their challenge, where I was the only girl in the competition and I beat all of them easily,” she said.
With 195 teams in the streetball challenge, it was divided into four
categories – Boys Under-12, Boys Under-15, Boys Under-18 and Men
Under-21.
The top-three winners in each category won World of Sports vouchers worth RM900, RM600 and RM300 respectively.
World Of Sports (M) Sdn Bhd international trade coordinator Susan
Cheong said the competition went on smoothly and added the teams played
their best to win and showcase their talents.
“Johor has never been disappointing for us where we always get good reception from the boys and girls,” she said.
After the three legs at IOI Mall in Puchong, Penang Times Square, and
Dataran Bandaraya in Johor Baru, the grand final would be held in Kuala
Lumpur in November.
The Malaysia Basketball Association sanctioned the competition, and StarMetro is the official media partner. Milo is the official beverage sponsor and Spalding the official ball partner.
