THE 10th edition of the upcoming AND1 3x3
Streetball Challenge 2015 at Penang Times Square is attracting not only
Penangites but also enthusiasts from other states.
Half of the teams registered so far are from Perlis, Kedah and Perak and the organiser has limited the entries to 200 teams. Freelance basketball coach Tan Chee Wan said young cagers from Kulim, Alor Setar, Kubang Pasu, Ipoh, Krian and Kangar have confirmed their participation.
“They have chartered buses to come to Penang for the competition. Most of them are players from MVP Basketball Academy,” he said before conducting a coaching clinic at SJK (C) Yang Cheng in Teluk Kumbar, Penang, recently.
“Good players possess not only skills but show the right temperament during competitions. In this way, they grow to become better players.”
A total of 42 players took part in the coaching session which was conducted ahead of the AND1 3x3 Streetball Challenge to be held at the Penang Times Square on Aug 15.
The session began with a warm-up drill. Then, the players were given pointers on ball handling, dribbling, passing and landing on one foot following a lay-up. Tan said he tried to conduct his training in an interesting manner so the players would get hooked to the game. Two certified coaches Ooi Jun Kai and Bryan Loh helped him.
SK Sacred Heart student G.M. Vicknesh, 14, said the training session under Tan was an eye-opener. “His approach is very different. You won’t feel tired or bored because most of the running is already incorporated into part of the drills,” he said.
