IT WAS an interesting training session for the boys of SMJK Kwang Hua basketball club in Klang when a former national youth coach and national basketball players dropped by to share their expertise during a AND1 basketball clinic visit.

During the two-hour session, national player Ng Sing Tee and ex-youth coach Sue Teck Hua conducted drills and dispensed tips on the art of basketballing.

Kwang Hua’s basketball team were strong contenders in the past within the Klang area but have yet to reach the same heights in recent times.

Coach Tan Cheng Yeow said the lack of renewal in talent was difficult but the boys had the potential as most of them were physically fit and some were siblings of players from their glory days.

“This coaching clinic, in conjunction with the AND1 streetball challenge, is a special start as we begin our training phase,” Cheng Yeowsaid.

It was not the usual curriculum routine the boys were anticipating and when they were introduced to the dynamic warm-up, they seemed a little uncomfortable but slowly got into the swing of things.

“Instead of the usual stationary stretching and warming up on the same spot, we want to engage their interest by doing something out of the ordinary” he noted.

Teck Hua and Sing Tee both took the time to share their insights with the budding basketball players and showed them how to improve on their physical abilities.

Teck Hua highlighted the need for good physical strength and taught the necessary drills to help them improve on resistance building while Cheng Yeowemphasised on ball handling and building up their mental strength.

The boys were charged up from the coaching clinic and a few of them could be seen still trying out their favourite drills.

“Some of the tips shared with us will be helpful during our AND1 games because of the variations and creativity it allows us,” said AND1 first-timers Amos Ching, 15, Darren Chai, 15 and Chune Yong, 15.

“It was also a new and fun way for us to train and we were very happy to be a part of it,” they added.

One tip shared by Teck Hua was to be prepared to play under the sun while Cheng Yeowadded that it was most important to have fun while competing.

The first leg of the AND1 3x3 Streetball Challenge will take place in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang on May 25 with 300 teams fighting it out for cash prizes and merchandise from Milo and AND1.

There will also be highlight events searching for the top three streetballers, the best shooter, a slam dunk competition as well as lucky draws.

The first 100 teams to register will also receive a limited edition LA Lakers basketball in addition to the Spalding ball for each team and AND1 jersey for each player.
