Teen bags Most Promising Player award

GAN KHIM TENG had mixed fortunes in the second leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at The Zon in Johor Baru recently.She was voted as the StarMetro Most Promising Player in the Challenge. However her team- Bukit Gambir - did not fare well in the girls’ Under-18 category of the challenge. The 13-year-old Gan, third in a family of seven, was easily the most outstanding player in the competition. She was in the thick of action and scored all her team’s seven points in the challenge.

Gan was shocked when her name was announced as the winner of the award.
“I just played my best and tried my hardest,” said Gan, who will get the privilege to train at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) academy.
However Gan said she would have to seek her parents’ permission before accepting the offer to train at the academy.
“I started playing basketball as a form of exercise but I grew to love the game since two years ago. Taking part in the AND1 Streetball Challenge was a chance I simply could not miss,” she said.

Former international Tan Kee Hian, who was a member of the organising team, said Gan was chosen because she had the skills. “She has a natural skill and has a lot of potential,” he said.
The challenge was organised by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, and sanctioned by the MABA.
Milo is the official beverage, StarMetro is the official media, FlyFM official radio while the ZON Johor Baru is the venue sponsor.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were satisfied with the response for the challenge.
“The youngsters had a wonderful time and we were happy with the enthusiasm shown by the participants,’’ said Saw.
Most outstanding: Gan Khim Teng, 13, who was named the the Star Metro Most Promising Player, with her trophy and basketball shoe.


Sky Two, with the Song twins - Guan Lin and Chie Lin, were the champions in the boys’ Under-16 age group. The other member of the team was Wong Yok Zhi.
In the boys’ Under-18 category, Bukit Gambir 2 emerged champions. Miracle B were champions in the boys’ Under-14 age group.
Lau Chin Hui emerged as the winner in the Freestylist competition. He was among the three finalists. The other two were Tan Qi Han and Teng Seng Fu.
The next leg of the challenge will be held at the AEON Jaya Jusco in Klang on June 28.
